Students Sidelined by Society

Sasha couldn’t cope in school. As she got older, she couldn’t manage her condition and was in danger of being sidelined by society.

She’d taken medication for ADHD for as long as she could remember, but being diagnosed with ADHD was just the tip of the iceberg. Thinking that she was different from everyone else led to feelings of anxiety and she’d spent most of her life crippled by fear.

Not knowing what to do, she would hurt herself, her family and her peers.

Sasha’s behaviour was spiralling and her parents had no choice but to withdraw her from school and were at a loss for what to do. Her Local Authority found the answer – an Accompanied Work Placement with Fresh Start in Education.

A dedicated Work Place Mentor, who had experience working with students with similar challenges, was assigned to Sasha. They designed a bespoke programme of engagement and training sessions tailored to her needs.

Sasha’s experiences had led to low self-esteem and a lack of confidence. Her Work Place Mentor got to know Sasha and by providing the specialist support she needed, things improved rapidly. When Sasha was referred to Fresh Start in Education, she struggled with the simplest of daily activities. Her Work Place Mentor’s holistic approach to planning their sessions resulted in a huge increase in Sasha’s confidence.

The Accompanied Work Placement program has helped Sasha turn her interest in hair and beauty into paid employment with an apprenticeship at a local salon. The fact she took it upon herself to organise the apprenticeship speaks volumes. Sasha is continuing to go from strength to strength and is continuing the programme to also gain her Functional Skills qualifications.

You probably know someone like Sasha, who would benefit from similar help and support.
